BRUNCH: Olivier Defays & Philippe Dervieux

Across a vast stylistic spectrum ranging from Fats Waller to Stan Getz, Philippe Dervieux on piano and Olivier Defays on saxophone make the most of their great musical complicity.
They challenge each other to daring improvisations, sometimes with musical suspense worthy of Alfred Hitchcock.

Olivier Defays :saxophonist, flutist, composer
Began playing the saxophone at the age of 16, studied jazz at the C.I.M.
arrangement at the IACP and classical harmony at the Conservatoire du Xeme.
He recorded his first album with the duo Blues Trottoir (Un Soir de Pluie). From 1992 to 1999, he played with the group Mambomania (2 albums and over 100 concerts in France and abroad).
As an accompanist, Olivier Defays performs and records for many artists: Thomas Fersen, Art Mengo,M.Amont,Sansévérino, Edith Lefel; Thomas Dutronc etc... As a composer, he has created the soundtracks for 2 feature films and a dozen TV films and documentaries. For the theater, he has composed the music for several plays such as "Fugueuses" (with L. Renaud and M. Robin), "Pierre et Fils" (with P. Richard and P. Palmade) and participated in the musical shows "L'ut
final" (XXeme Théâtre), "Swing Heil" (Festival Avignon) and numerous plays at Oscar Castro's Théâtre Aleph.
Olivier Defays currently performs with a number of orchestras, including Dany Doriz's Big Band, the "Mizikopeyi" Caribbean big band the "Côte Ouest" big band L.Mignard's Duke Orchestra, as well as his own quartet "Men in Bop", the Classic Jam Quartet and "Swingin'Affair".

Philippe Dervieux; pianist, composer.
After studying classical piano at the Scola Cantorum (Paris Vème) and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Musique de Paris, he studied jazz piano with American pianist Aaron Bridgers and jazz pianist and teacher Bernard Maury. He studied harmony and composition with composer and musicologist André Hodeir, and orchestration with composer Alain Besson.
A versatile pianist, he plays with modern jazz groups, big bands, soloists and, in particular, with his trio.
His wide-ranging repertoire includes the best-known international standards, the French chanson repertoire, and the great themes of jazz history from the 30s/40s (swing and boogie-woogie) to the 50s/60s.
Also a composer for images, he is passionate about all forms of writing, always on the lookout for different worlds. Philippe Devrieux has worked for a number of productions, publishers and television channels. He recently composed an original symphonic score for the 1925 silent film The Phantom Of The Opera.
